I try not to build too big of an unread book stash. I have around 20 books purchased over the last few years that I haven’t yet read. From time to time I do a purge and give away any books I no longer want to read, or maybe never really wanted to read but somehow acquired. All of the books currently on my shelves are still interesting to me and I will get to all of them! Before the holiday madness weakens my resolve not to indulge in a book haul, here are three books I am going to prioritize over the next few months.
The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John C. Bogle
I LOVE to read books about personal finance. I have read so many over the years, but since the information does get outdated I don’t actually own very many. I picked this up sometime in the last year because I have never read it, even though it is a true classic. This is the 10th Anniversary edition and the cover states it is updated and revised. It was written by John C. Bogle, who started the Vanguard Group – so I trust the information will be sound. Lots of personal finance books are not actually written by finance professionals and their messaging can be pretty dodgy.
Money For the Rest of Us by J. David Stein
I have actually started to read this at some point, but got so busy with work and other responsibilities that I decide I would start over when I could really focus on it. It is not what I would consider a light read, and when I am reading to learn I have to be able to block out distractions. The author has an impressive resume in the field of financial research, and has a podcast as well.
I think I may leave the personal finance books for January, when I need some inspiration to get into belt-tightening mode!
Joyful by Ingrid Fetell Lee
Since we are headed into the festive season, I am going to prioritize this one! This book explores how our physical surroundings affect our mood. A lot of books that seek to help us improve our happiness stress the importance of prioritizing the internal over the external. I agree that comparison can be the thief of joy! But this book proposes that there are a lot of mood enhancing pleasures in our surroundings that deserve our attention. At least that is what I take from the book jacket – I will update you after I finish it!
